Important Details

  • Level: Senior
  • Type: Contract / Freelance (with potential long-term collaboration)
  • Location: North America, South America, or Europe
  • Engine: Unreal Engine 5.7
  • Project: Co-op Horror Puzzle Adventure (PC)
  • Mode: Fully Remote

This is a short-term project, and we fully support candidates who wish to combine it with an existing job. We value reliability, communication, and high-quality craftsmanship.

Project Overview

We believe sound is one of the core pillars of atmosphere in games. This is especially true for psychological horror. We are developing an unannounced game. The project is developed fully from scratch. All assets are created internally. The visual style is inspired by Tim Burton’s works. The inspiration is reinterpreted through a darker and more psychological lens. We are looking for a Sound Designer who can help us build a tense, unsettling, and immersive audio experience.

Current Project Stage

We are currently developing a demo version of the project.

The demo includes three locations:

  • Two locations are open-type environments.
  • One location is a closed and confined interior space.
  • The scope also includes marketing materials.

Content Scope

You will work on audio for:

  • Three locations
  • Two open environments
  • One enclosed interior location
  • Two short teasers (20 and 30 seconds)
  • One trailer (45 seconds)

Sound Effects (SFX)

Required sound effects include:

  • Footsteps on different surface types
  • Item interactions (five interaction types)
  • Menu and UI interaction sounds
  • Player character actions
  • NPC actions
  • Damage, death, and impact sounds
  • VoIP-related effects
  • Distance-based and masking effects

Audio Goals

The goal is to create a complete and cohesive audio experience. This includes atmosphere, interaction feedback, and tension. Audio should support psychological pressure and a sense of presence. The focus is immersion, not loud or constant sound.

Responsibilities

  • Create and select sound effects (we are mostly likely will use open-bank sound, if you would like to)
  • Design footsteps and interaction sounds
  • Design character and object action sounds
  • Build ambient soundscapes
  • Create layered environmental ambience
  • Design dynamic ambience reacting to player state
  • Use silence and micro-details intentionally
  • Build tension through sparse and minimal audio
  • Implement audio in Unreal Engine
  • Create and configure Sound Cues
  • Work with spatial and 3D audio
  • Set up triggers and basic audio logic
  • Work with in-game VoIP audio (sound-related aspects only)

Music and Ambience

The role will include work on music and ambient sound.

Possible approaches include:

  • Composing ambient music from scratch
  • Creating soundscape-based ambience
  • Using layered or procedural audio
  • Avoiding traditional musical structures

The focus is atmosphere and psychological tension.

Production Notes

We understand that creating all audio from scratch is time-consuming. The use of stock or open-source sound libraries is allowed. All materials must be carefully selected and adapted to the project. Thoughtful curation is more important than origin.

Restrictions

The use of AI-generated music is strictly prohibited

Timezone note:

We are currently only considering candidates based in North America, South America, or Europe due to timezone overlap
