Position Details

  • Job Posting: Technical Artist Mentor (Unity / URP)
  • Company: Isto Inc.
  • Project: The Rope
  • Type: Freelance Contract (4–6 months)
  • Hours: Approx. 3–6 hours per week (flexible schedule)
  • Pay: Paid — hourly rate negotiable depending on experience
  • Location: Remote (Note: For tax purposes we have a very strong preference for Canadian-based applicants)

About the Project

The Rope is an atmospheric co-op horror game set in 1500s England, where players step into the role of a barred priest searching for the missing archbishop deep within a haunted forest

Developed in Unity 6, the game focuses on immersive outdoor environments — dense woods, foggy clearings, and eerie moonlit lighting — blending realism with a stylized visual identity.

About Isto Inc.

Isto Inc. is a small, independent Canadian studio made up of three full-time developers. The Rope will be our fourth commercial game, following a series of creative, story-driven indie projects.

We value experimentation, tight collaboration, and growth!

We’re also flexible — this position is ideal for an experienced developer who may already be working full-time elsewhere but wants to take on a side role helping mentor a passionate team and shape the look of our next title.

The Role

We’re seeking an experienced Technical Artist Mentor to guide our team in leveling up our rendering and visual art skills.

While we’re strong generalists, we have limited experience in technical art and want to build a stronger understanding of Unity’s rendering pipeline, lighting systems, and stylized shader development.

You’ll act as both a mentor and collaborator — helping us identify learning paths, setting our rendering approach, and assist with implementation of technical features that elevate our outdoor environments.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide feedback, resources, and direction to help the team grow their technical art capabilities.
  • Mentor and guide the team on Unity rendering techniques, lighting, and shader development.
  • Advise and implement improvements for stylized outdoor environments — trees, grass, foliage, and real-time lighting.
  • Help establish URP-based rendering workflows suitable for stylized yet performant visuals.
  • Collaborate directly with Stephen (The Founder) on experimentation, testing, and implementation.

Must Have

  • Expert-level Unity knowledge (non-negotiable).
  • Experience with URP custom rendering features, particularly for stylized outdoor forest environments
  • Strong understanding of lighting strategies, fog, post-processing, and VFX authoring
  • Familiarity with GPU profiling and debugging tools such as RenderDoc and Unity’s Frame Debugger.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and mentor others on technical topics.

Nice to Have

  • Experience creating or optimizing stylized rendering pipelines in Unity.
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, or documenting workflows for small development teams.

Tools & Stack

  • Unity 6 (URP)
  • HLSL / ShaderGraph
  • Blender (Experience optional)

To Apply

Please send us an email with:

  • A portfolio demonstrating your Unity rendering work (custom passes, shaders, lighting setups, or editor tools).
  • Any case studies or examples of projects where you extended or customized Unity’s rendering pipeline.
About
Isto Inc.

Isto Inc. is a Three-Man indie dev team based in Canada. We're the creators of Disjoint, Atrio and our newest game, Get To work.

Our Philosophy

We live by one rule: Make amazing games. And also don't be jerks.

So technically two rules. But we're all about breaking rules cuz we're bad like that. So technically we could make a mediocre game just to break the rules but so far all of our game(s) have been amazing.

Get To Work is a punishing, yet satisfying experience about a young man on a mission to conquer the corporate world... on rollerblades. Maneuver a slippery character with rollerblades on both his arms and feet that only knows how to move fast.

Atrio: The Dark Wild is a survival game set in a cyberpunk inspired post-apocalyptic world. Bend nature to your will by capturing and exploiting the creatures and environment to help you survive at all costs. The many threats and challenges you will face are too difficult to handle on your own, you must build, automate and optimize your systems to keep the world at bay to stay alive.
