We're an indie game developer working on a pirate themed 2D roguelike strategy, turn-based game centered around ships, cannons, and exploring the seas. The player manages a shipyard, recruits crews, builds cannons, and battles rival ships in tactical combat. We’re looking for a UX Designer to elevate the player experience by refining usability, visual feedback, and overall game feel through strong UX, UI, and juicy effects.

 

About the Game 

Our current project is a pirate-themed 2D roguelike strategy game built on Unity where players command multi-deck ships, recruit unique crew, and unleash tactical cannon battles on the high seas. Inspired by games like Monster Train and Slay the Spire, it blends turn-based tactical combat with the unpredictability of roguelike exploration. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Onboard onto the existing Unity project and become familiar with current systems and workflows.
  • Own and improve the UX and UI across the full project, ensuring clarity, consistency, and strong player guidance.
  • Add “juice” throughout the game: transitions, VFX, feedback, and micro-interactions that make actions feel satisfying and alive.
  • Collaborate closely with the team during playtests and reviews.
  • Attend playtests and work with the game director to analyze player feedback and build clear action plans to enhance the player experience.
  • Iterate quickly on UX/UI solutions based on testing results and design goals.

 

Requirements

  • Deep understanding of Unity, including UI systems, VFX integration, and implementation workflows.
  • Strong practical UX skills, with a focus on usability, player flow, and feedback.
  • A strong eye for juice, polish, and moment-to-moment feel (timing, easing, effects, sound hooks, etc.).
  • Ability to work quickly, independently, and proactively in a remote setup.
  • Comfortable taking ownership and making UX/UI decisions without heavy oversight.
