Memory Ware is looking for a UI Designer / UI Artist to own the visual direction and production of the user interface for our modern fantasy JRPG.
You will work within the Design team, collaborating directly with our UX Designer, Game Design, Art, and Programming. Our UX Designer focuses on flows, usability, information hierarchy, and wireframes. Your role will be to transform that work into a cohesive, expressive, and production-ready UI that supports the game’s intentions and fits its Art Direction.
This is an end-to-end position. We are looking for someone comfortable moving from visual exploration and UI art creation to implementation and iteration directly in Unreal Engine.
Responsibilities
- Define and maintain the game’s overall UI visual direction.
- Transform UX wireframes and prototypes into polished interfaces.
- Collaborate with UX and Game Design from the early definition of features.
- Ensure consistency between the UI, gameplay intentions, and Art Direction.
- Create UI assets, components, icons, menus, HUD elements, and visual states.
- Build and maintain a scalable UI design system.
- Prepare and implement UI assets directly in Unreal Engine.
- Replace placeholders and wireframes with iterative and final UI.
- Test interfaces in-game and iterate based on feedback and usability findings.
- Share work early and validate ideas before investing in unnecessary polish.
Requirements
- A strong game UI or interactive visual design portfolio.
- Strong skills in composition, hierarchy, typography, color, and readability.
- Experience taking UI from wireframes through final production.
- Experience creating reusable components and consistent design systems.
- Practical experience implementing UI in Unreal Engine, ideally using UMG and Widget Blueprints.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with multiple disciplines.
- Comfort working iteratively in a changing indie-development environment.
- Ability to balance visual quality, usability, technical limitations, and production scope.
Nice to Have
- UI motion design and animation experience.
- Experience with Unreal UI materials, shaders, or VFX.
- Experience with RPGs, JRPGs, or information-heavy game interfaces.
- Experience designing for both controller and mouse-and-keyboard navigation.
- Illustration, iconography, graphic design, or technical UI skills.
The ideal candidate is proactive, shares work frequently, tests ideas directly in the game, and can take ownership of the UI process from early exploration through final implementation.
