We are looking for a VFX artist to create the visual effects for our unannounced dark fantasy/sci-fi first person shooter for VR and PC (Non-VR), inspired by games like Doom, Quake, Devil Daggers, and Hyper Demon.

We want an artist with plenty of gamedev VFX experience who would be excited to jump into a project with a small team that will offer lots of creative freedom and opportunities for collaboration with our lead artist. 

We will ask you to push boundaries to make strange and memorable effects. There is a chance with this role to define and explore more unique or abstract ‘elements’ than the typical fantasy mainstays. 

As Mobile VR support is required, the VFX requires many considerations due to performance constraints -- this means primarily that the use of transparent textures will be significantly limited or discouraged compared to a non-VR project. Our ideal candidate has experience creating VFX for VR and will be excited to explore the aesthetic possibilities within these limitations. 

 

Requirements

  • 2+ years professional game development VFX experience
  • VR Capable (Access to standalone HMD preferred)
  • Must be comfortable working with and creating VFX in Unity
  • Comfort with source control
  • 3D Generalist skills with modeling and texturing in a 3D package (Maya would be a bonus) 
  • Proficiency with Photoshop and Houdini or equivalent

 

Responsibilities

  • Work with the art director to explore aesthetic possibilities and implement assets in Unity for: 
    • Elemental weapons effects
    • Portal and wormhole effects
    • Enemy effects
    • Environmental effects
    • Player effects
  • Author VFX assets and prefabs in Unity that scale from high fidelity on PC down to mobile VR headsets while maintaining a strong visual identity
  • Iterate on effects based on in-game testing in Unity in flat and VR modes
  • Approach work holistically as a collaborator in a small team and always prioritize communication
  • Author high poly creature/character sculpts/models where desired, retopologize, UV, texture, rig, and animate characters
