Ride the Lion Studios is an independent game development studio developing Tamer: King of Dinosaurs, an Unreal Engine 4 (version 4.27.2) project in Early Access that currently has a 93% positive recent review score on Steam!

We're looking for talented technical artists who enjoy solving creative problems, building polished gameplay experiences, and working closely with designers, programmers, and artists.

This is a fully remote contractor position, which means you’re welcome to work from home in your pajamas and no one will care. Hours are also reasonably flexible though priority may be given to candidates in European or Asian time zones as the studio generally operates between 12:00 and 20:00 (GMT +2).

We're hiring several contractors for this role expected to last between August 2026 and April 2027, with the possibility of transitioning into a full-time role on our next project if things are a great fit.

Portfolio Requirement

  • A strong portfolio is mandatory.
  • Please include examples of previous work that clearly showcase your technical abilities.
  • Experience working on shipped commercial games (Steam, console, or other marketplaces) is a significant advantage.

Responsibilities

Depending on your experience and areas of expertise, you may work on one or more of the following systems (the more you can handle, the more hours we can give you):

  • Creating high-quality combat particle effects and visual effects.
  • Building optimized visual effects that create surreal environments, such as energy fields, psychic landscapes, and abstract "inside the mind" environments.
  • Developing gameplay systems for a fort construction module, including interactions such as chopping wood and environmental object manipulation.
  • Building technical systems for a cooking minigame involving ingredient preparation, cutting, stirring, cooking, and dynamic material changes such as browning, burning, and colour transitions over time.
  • Implementing physics-driven gameplay systems, including siege weapons and corpse launching mechanics.
  • Creating and implementing animation sequences using Sequencer for dinosaurs interacting with the environment, such as lifting logs, moving objects, and performing scripted behaviours.
  • Building gameplay-focused minigames inside Unreal Engine.
  • Working closely with our programmers to integrate systems into the game while maintaining performance and stability.

Please note that you will always have support from experienced Unreal Engine developers for programming-heavy tasks.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience as a Technical Artist (4+ years of experience is preferred).
  • Strong experience with Unreal Engine 4.
  • Working knowledge of Blueprints sufficient to support your own technical art workflows.
  • Experience using Unreal Engine Levels and Sequencer.
  • Strong understanding of optimisation and performance.
  • Experience creating particle systems and gameplay visual effects.
  • Knowledge of shaders and materials.
  • Experience using version control systems such as Perforce and/or Git.
  • Solid written and spoken English.
  • A detailed résumé outlining previous projects. If portions of your work are under NDA, please describe your responsibilities without revealing confidential information.
  • Professional attitude, reliability, and the ability to collaborate remotely.

About
Ride the Lion Studios

Ride the Lion Studios is an exciting new development team founded by New York Times best-selling author, Michael-Scott Earle, with the goal of bringing his many successful novels to life in the video game world. Our first project will be a high-quality adaptation of his most famous series: Tamer - King of Dinosaurs.

We’re a tightly knit team that has worked together for many years and our last project actually hit number one on Steam!

Tamer: King of Dinosaurs is a narrative-driven adventure game with a high-end performance capture pipeline and gameplay inspired by ARK: Survival Evolved and the Monster Hunter series.

The story follows a young man named Victor who has been abducted by aliens for unknown reasons and brought to a planet where he must fight for survival in a world overrun by vicious prehistoric beasts.

In addition to using his newfound taming powers to control dinosaurs and provide food and water for the women he has sworn to protect, their survival will involve a race against time to establish shelter before they are overrun by the impending migration of very hungry and dangerous monsters.
