Who We Are

What happens when you combine an elite cadre of award-winning games industry veterans, a pair of plucky newcomers, and three racoons in a trenchcoat masquerading as an adult human? You get Snackbar Studio - an all-remote, indie studio passionate about creating quirky, engaging, narrative games.

Our first title - The SnackBar at the End of the World - is scheduled for release next year. In this top-down, chill-action RPG for Steam, Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox, players take the role of a chef in a magical, 1960s-era Italy. They’ll forage, cook, and scheme to earn lire as they fight to save their city against an authoritarian mayor’s clutches, all while perfecting the perfect Spaghetti alla Carbonara. (Want to see more? Check out our super-top-secret-but-technically-public investor trailer here.)

Our game embraces antifascist, anti-racist, LGBTQ+ inclusive, feminist themes. So does our team. If that sounds like your jam, please read on!

The role

We're looking for a 2D Generalist Game Artist to help bring SnackBar to life. This is a hands-on, cross-disciplinary, fully-remote role. You'll be creating 2D assets, working directly inside Unity, and contributing to the overall visual quality of the game, from level composition to UI polish.

You'll work under the direct supervision of our Art Director and Senior Animator, so you won't be flying solo - but we do expect you to be proactive, confident and competent in your craft, and comfortable owning multiple areas of the game.

What you'll do

  • Create 2D game assets consistent with the game's established visual style and art direction
  • Manage and implement assets in Unity - prefab setup, asset organization, and pipeline hygiene
  • Support level design: working with collisions, triggers, and Unity components to build compelling game spaces
  • Create and maintain visual FX using Unity's particle and effects systems
  • Work with materials and shaders (including Shader Graph) to achieve the visual targets set by the art direction
  • Contribute to UI design and help the team ship clean, readable, well-crafted interfaces
  • Apply a strong eye for composition and color theory across all your work
  • Help with marketing materials and assets for stores

What we're looking for

  • Solid 2D illustration and asset creation skills in the style of the game, with a portfolio that shows it
  • Comfortable working inside Unity - prefabs, components, asset pipelines
  • Hands-on experience with Unity's FX systems
  • Working knowledge of materials and shaders, ideally including Shader Graph
  • A genuine eye for composition, colour, and visual storytelling
  • Enough confidence with level design fundamentals to set up collisions, triggers, and basic Unity components without hand-holding
  • Sensibility for UI and HUD design, you care about readability, hierarchy, and craft
  • Ability to work independently and asynchronously in a remote team
  • At least one published game title on a major platform is required

Bonus skills

  • 2D animation experience (frame-by-frame or rigged) - we know this is rare, but we like to dream big
  • Knowledge of Unity's render pipeline, ideally URP, including custom render passes and renderer features
  • Familiarity with the indie game development pipeline and the realities of small-team production
  • Strong shader authoring skills: Shader Graph and HLSL
  • Proven experience profiling and optimizing graphics performance in shipped Unity titles
  • Ability to track down and fix visual bugs

What we offer

  • Fully remote work - work from anywhere in Europe/UK
  • Competitive compensation - we aim to pay in the top 20% of freelance rates with a long-term contract
  • Flexible scheduling within European time zones, with regular sync-ups with the art director and team (usually on Mondays or Tuesdays at 5pm GMT/6pm CET)
  • The chance to make a big creative impact on an ambitious indie title with a lot of marketing firepower

How to Apply

Send an email and include these three things:

  1. The most significant published game titles you’ve worked on
  2. A link to your portfolio/reel.
  3. Your CV and LinkedIn profile
  4. Anything else that can help us get to know you better

Unfortunately, we cannot reply to applications that fail to include the first three items, so please make sure you send them. We’re eager to see your work!

About
Snackbar Studio

Snackbar Studio is a FRESH indie game Development firm. We don’t make snacks. We aren’t a bar (one of us keeps getting accused of being drunk at work, but that’s just because she keeps it real). We’re a team of industry professionals with decades of experience under our collective belts. We’ve developed dozens of games, published a handful of books, launched a few successful companies, and spent a large percentage of our lives trying to beat this one level on Metroid (and then we’ll go to bed, Mom! Promise.) (We lied, we are never going to bed.)

We’ve launched a new studio built around the idea that good times shouldn’t just begin when you pick up that controller - they should be part of every single workday. Because you can’t create fun for others if you aren’t having it yourself.

The SnackBar at the End of the World is a story about love, defiance, ... and pasta. Our first release? A top-down, chill-action RPG for PC, Switch, Playstation, and Xbox that will satisfy the most discerning appetites. Forage, hunt, cook, and scheme in a magical, alternate reality, 1960s Italy.

Escape your city’s walls to the forbidden wilderness beyond. Battle magically-possessed boars, some very irritable enchanted vegetables, and the corrupt local government. Discover a magical portal to an enchanted market run by… raccoons? And (perhaps most challenging of all) master the perfect cacio e pepe recipe before the tyrannical mayor shuts your restaurant down. (No pressure.)

Welcome to SnackBar. When you’re here, you’re part of the resistance.
