We’re Studio Hoiho, an independent game development studio based in Copenhagen.

We’re looking for a 3D environment artist who can collaborate with artists, designers, and programmers to help develop the natural settings and overall visual style of a tropical alien planet.

Our current project is a small adventure game about using an intricate network of rivers to transport fruit while exploring a tropical open world of island-dwelling aliens. The titular character, ‘Pipit’, is a one-of-a-kind fruit collecting bird robot created to fulfil the local inhabitants’ demand for fruit juice. The islands Pipit will travel between are small tropical havens, containing memorable landmarks like volcanoes, secret caves, and forest clearings, as well as distinctive wildlife and alien plant species all local to the island they’re found on.

What you’ll be doing

Your primary roll will be transforming concept art and grey-box levels into finalised environments for a single island - all in a cohesive visual style within Unreal Engine.

  • Collaborate with our concept artist to create unique assets and develop the modern interpretation of PS2/GameCube era art direction that we’re aiming for.
  • Work with designers to apply those assets and visual aesthetics to level designs in Unreal in a way that feels immersive and believable.
  • Sculpt terrain and create environmental details and animations that add to the natural tropical ambience of the unique locations around the island.

What we’re looking for

Your application will predominately be assessed on the quality of your previous environment artist work and how well it fits with our project, so we encourage people of any level to apply. We’re also on the lookout for any additional knowledge such as -

  • Knowledge of Unreal Engine’s rendering capabilities, particularly in creating a wide variety of NPR styles.
  • Extensive experience modelling assets in Blender.
  • Texture art experience, as well as working with materials & textures within Unreal.
  • Digital painting skills and a highly developed artistic sensibility.
  • 3D rigging, animation, and VFX skills.

We are also looking for someone who is excited about all of the small intricacies of game development, as well as being passionate about playing games overall.

Our approach to development does not include crunching towards arbitrary deadlines - instead, we particularly look for talented people who enjoy managing their own schedule and thrive on working within a friendly, collaborative environment.

Details

  • Flexible contract position starting late March / early April, with an expected duration of around 1 month.
  • Fully remote with applications being considered from anywhere. Communication will be in English.
  • We’re hoping this will to turn into a full-time thing after the contract is finished, and in that instance we might ask if you’d consider relocating to Copenhagen (but this is not a requirement).
