We’re Studio Hoiho, an independent game development studio based in Copenhagen.

We’re looking for a gameplay programmer who can collaborate with designers to transform a prototype into a fun and polished gameplay experience.

Our current project is a small adventure game about using an intricate network of rivers to transport fruit while exploring a tropical open world of island-dwelling aliens. The titular character, ‘Pipit’, is a one-of-a-kind fruit collecting bird robot created to fulfil the local inhabitants’ demand for fruit juice. Pipit makes use of a rolling ball to skate around the world, and has access to a few key tools and gizmos to help accomplish its fruit based tasks.

What you’ll be doing

Your primary roll will be building and fine-tuning the player movement and ability systems to create an extremely satisfying and fluid gameplay experience for players. This requires a keen eye for how to adjust a given interaction in order to get the resulting experience to feel just right.

  • Collaborate with designers to build and refine levels and gameplay interactions.
  • Develop player movement and ability systems with a high level of precision in Unreal.
  • Work with Unreal’s physics systems to create interesting and unique puzzle mechanics.

What we’re looking for

Your application will be assessed on the quality of your previous work and how well it fits with our project, so we encourage people of any level to apply. However, you’ll at least need to be very comfortable working in the latest version of Unreal, with a good knowledge of Blueprints and/or C++.

We are also looking for someone who is excited about all of the small intricacies of gameplay design, as well as being passionate about playing games overall.

Our approach to development does not include crunching towards arbitrary deadlines - instead, we particularly look for talented people who enjoy managing their own schedule and thrive on working within a friendly, collaborative environment.

We explicitly encourage applications from women, people of colour, people with disabilities and other groups that are underrepresented throughout the games industry.

Details

  • Flexible contract position with an expected duration of 3 months.
  • Fully remote with applications being considered from anywhere. Communication will be in English.
  • Possibility to turn into a full-time thing after 3 months, in which case we might ask if you’d consider relocating to Copenhagen.

How to apply

If you’re interested in applying please fill out the form with a link to your portfolio and/or CV, along with any other information you feel might be relevant, and we’ll aim to respond as soon as possible. Thanks for your time! 🥭
