What We Need

Turn Me Up is looking for a dedicated and innovative Technical Artist specializing in Unreal Engine. This artist will work with Turn Me Up’s art and engineering teams to push the visual quality of our projects while maintaining peak performance. Key responsibilities include profiling performance, creating and optimizing shaders, VFX, and lighting, and managing the asset integration pipeline between DCC software and the game engine.

Due to the multi-disciplinary requirements of this position, a strong understanding of both artistic and technical constraints is paramount. This position requires strong communication skills to act as a liaison between creative and technical departments, translating artistic needs into technical solutions and vice-versa.

What You’ll Do:

  • Profile game performance across multiple hardware platforms, identifying bottlenecks and implementing optimizations within the rendering pipeline.
  • Create and optimize high-quality materials, shaders, VFX (Niagara), lighting, and post-processing effects to achieve the desired visual style while respecting performance budgets.
  • Manage the migration and integration of 3D assets and animations from DCC software (e.g., Blender, Maya) into Unreal Engine, ensuring format compatibility and efficiency.
  • Work closely with artists, designers, and engineers to solve complex technical art challenges and propose innovative solutions.
  • Develop and maintain tools, scripts, and editor utilities to improve the workflows for artists and content creators.
  • Collaborate with engineers to implement and tune platform-specific features and optimizations.
  • Write and maintain clear documentation for technical art pipelines, tools, and best practices.
  • Participate in daily stand-ups to give progress updates and resolve blockers.
  • Test game visuals across platforms to validate quality, performance, and functionality.

What Would Make a Strong Candidate:

  • Expert-level knowledge of Unreal Engine, particularly its rendering pipeline, Material Editor, and Niagara VFX system.
  • Experience with Unreal's performance and profiling tools (e.g., Unreal Insights, Profiler).
  • Proven experience with industry-standard 3D software (e.g., Blender, Maya, 3ds Max) for modeling, texturing, and animation.
  • High degree of familiarity with Unreal Blueprints and strong scripting fundamentals.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical team members.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a dynamic, collaborative environment and meet project deadlines.

Bonus Skills That Will Make Your Profile Shine:

  • Experience shipping Unreal projects for consoles (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox) and/or mobile devices.
  • Experience in both UE4 and UE5
  • Experience with character rigging and skinning.
  • Experience with Houdini.
  • Scripting experience in Python and/or MEL.
  • Knowledge of shader languages, such as HLSL.

Application Requirements:

  • A portfolio or demo reel demonstrating relevant skills and a selection of your best work.
  • 3-5+ years of experience as a Technical Artist in the games industry.
