Hey there! I'm Ryan, a game dev that's been making indie games for the last 10 years!
My studio Weathered Sweater is preparing to start preproduction on a new project and we're looking for an experienced Gameplay Programmer to help with tasks associated with the prototyping and development of a top-down JRPG-inspired game.
The ideal candidate is a gameplay-oriented programmer with lots of experience writing clean, easy to read code in Unity. This programmer should have experience working on AND shipping pixel art games with Unity and should enjoy JRPGs and Mega Man Battle Network series.
General Information:
- This is a paid, freelance, as needed role.
- During preproduction, hours will be "as needed". This means, at least to start, the amount of work may be inconsistent (but flexible) from week-to-week depending on what's needed to push preproduction forward. If the project moves to production the job will transition to more consistent work influenced by what we discover in preproduction.
- If you are hired, there is a 6 week probation period during which we will be evaluating the relationship. After this period we'll determine whether or not to extend the contract.
Requirements and Experience:
- At least 1 shipped commercial game (Steam and/or console) or 3+ released hobby games (any/all preferably developed with Unity)
- Highly experienced with Unity and C# (you can confidently build an entire, stable, architecturally sound and maintainable game on your own using Unity)
- Great sense of aesthetic (you have proven that you can make a game look and feel good)
- Experience with making sure pixel art games render properly in Unity
- General JRPG fan or Mega Man Battle Network series enjoyer (ideally both!). What matters is that you are excited by and familiar with the genre
- Intermediate/expert level experience using Git and Bitbucket with Unity
Valuable, but not required:
- Shipped games on consoles (Xbox, Switch, PlayStation)
- Some graphics programming chops
- Experience with Docker/Jenkins or equivalent for building and maintaining dev ops processes for Unity deployments
- Experience with or a proven desire to learn other game engines such as Game Maker or Godot
- Anime/manga enjoyer
Studio Information:
- The studio is currently just me and anyone I work with on an as-needed basis (like you!). I've worked on many games over the last 10 years and I've been mostly self-funded that entire time!
- I tend to work on a few internal projects at a time, and historically we have taken on contract work to fund things. The goal now is to generate income from our shipped products so we can sustain more of the studio through sales.
- We pay monthly through Bill.com. An account is not required, but makes things easier! This is ACH/direct deposit or wire depending on where you are located. Generally we'll pay monthly for worked billed in the previous month.
- We communicate through Slack (moving to Discord soon) and currently use Trello for product/project management, though we often switch to more advanced project management tools (Monday, Jira) as projects develop.
- More info at our website!

I will aim to get "yes let's talk more" and "no, we're not interested" type emails sent out quickly.
