Wooly Games is seeking a Technical Designer to assist with level and puzzle creation. This role involves working alongside the rest of the development team to expand on the existing game levels, mechanics, and puzzles. You will help design new and interesting methods of interaction, design new gameplay moments, and assist in building these elements into the world of Feltopia.
This role is ideal for someone who is excited to develop puzzles and memorable gameplay moments, contribute to a first-of-its-kind hand-felted video game, and has an interest in story-telling and inclusive game development.
Responsibilities
- Design satisfying puzzles and interactive moments for the various realms of Feltopia. This includes designing the logic, level layout, and intended player experiences
- Work closely with the programming team to build and iterate puzzles and level moments in Unity using the provided gameplay systems and tools
- Design progression of difficulty and introduce new skills to players, ensuring game mechanics are taught smoothly and intuitively
- Balance challenge and reward loops
- Integrate memorable story-telling moments and puzzle platforming moments together, providing a cohesive experience for players
- Work closely with narrative and art direction to ensure puzzle and interactive design reinforces the emotional beats and story of the game
- Champion playtesting and iteration, work to refine puzzle clarity and pacing, based on feedback and analytics
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years experience in game design, level design, or technical design on shipped or in-development titles
- Comfortable working directly in the Unity editor to build and iterate levels
- Demonstrated ability to design puzzles and interactions that are appropriately challenging, rewarding
- Ability to convey story and a variety of emotional beats though level design
- Strong understanding of 2D/2.5D platformer mechanics and their design
- Experience designing tutorial moments that teach through play
- Ability to read and contribute to design documents and translate high-level concepts into concrete, buildable moments
- Strong communication and collaboration skills. An ability to work remotely effectively
- Passion for designing narrative experiences
- Working knowledge of version control systems like Git
- Must use own computer. Unity license and other required software fees paid for by studio
Preferred Qualifications
- Has shipped at least one game using Unity
- Experience designing for a young or family-friendly audience
- Passion for hand-crafted video games and an appreciation for stop-motion animation
