We’re looking for an experienced pixel artist / art director to help refine and unify the visual direction of an indie retro JRPG currently in development.
This is not a full production role.
We already have assets and pipelines — what we need is someone to elevate, align, and guide.
🧠 What you’ll do
- Review our current art documentation (style guides, palettes, asset examples)
- Identify inconsistencies in:
- Color usage (saturation, value, hue balance)
- Lighting and contrast
- Readability in gameplay
- Cohesion between characters, environments, and effects
- Provide clear, actionable feedback (not just high-level critique)
- Suggest improvements to:
- Palette strategy (global vs category-based)
- Shading approach
- Asset consistency rules
- Help us refine a simple, enforceable art direction guide the team can follow
Optional / ongoing:
- Monthly or biweekly reviews of newly delivered assets
- Quick feedback cycles to prevent drift in quality or style
🧩 What we’re looking for
- Strong experience with pixel art for games (preferably RPGs)
- A portfolio showing:
- Consistent visual direction across a project
- Ability to work within constraints (not just one-off pieces)
- Someone who can:
- Give direct, honest feedback
- Explain why something isn’t working
- Offer practical fixes, not just critique
- Bonus:
- Experience cleaning up or unifying inconsistent asset sets
- Experience working with small indie teams
⚙️ Engagement
- Initial phase:
- Review + feedback on current assets and documentation
- Deliver a revised / improved art direction guideline
- Ongoing (optional):
- Monthly consultation to review new assets
- Async feedback (written or recorded)
💬 Why this role exists
We’ve built a solid base of assets, but they come from different sources and levels of polish.
We want to bring everything together into a cohesive, intentional visual identity without restarting production.
💸 Compensation
- Flexible:
- Fixed price for initial review + documentation improvements
- Hourly or monthly rate for ongoing consultation
📩 How to apply
Send:
- Portfolio
- Short note on how you approach fixing inconsistent art styles
- (Optional but appreciated) quick critique of our current visuals
We value clear, practical feedback over perfectionism. We prefer someone who can help us move forward, not someone who pushes for a full rework.
