At League of Geeks, we dedicate ourselves to creating characterful play experiences with signature charm. Our games tell stories with heart, through their gameplay, world, text and voice. We’re looking for a writer that knows how to leverage all the tricks of a non-linear medium to deliver a big bang, in a small package.

As a Writer, you will work closely with the Game Director, Creative Director and Principal Designer to conceptualise and deliver heart-filled stories that play to the strength of the medium. You will have a deep appreciation for adaptation and storytelling, non-linear narrative structures and gameplay-driven narrative devices.

Soon to emerge from our recent hibernation, League of Geeks remains committed to building a world-class working environment for game developers, with a genuine focus on well being, skill development, community and purpose. So if you’re keen to join the reinvention of one of the world’s leading independent studios as we embark on a brand new PC/console project, we'd love to hear from you!

This is a part-time, 24 month, contract position, though make no mistake, you will be a critical part of the LoG team.

Women and other underrepresented developers, please apply! We pride ourselves on our inclusive work environment and output, so we’d love to work with you.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of role-relevant experience working on commercially released videogames.
  • Experience owning and producing narrative content within the constraints of an existing IP.
  • Deep understanding of non-linear narrative structures and devices.
  • Demonstrable restraint and interest in writing economy and efficiency.
  • Enthusiasm for working hands-on to implement narrative content, utilising in-engine tooling.
  • Experience delivering written content for localisation and VO pipelines.
  • A commitment to working in a professional, inclusive and supportive environment.
  • Ability to work independently; managing time, task lists and workflow with ease.
  • Detail sensitivity, a proven aesthetic eye and strong design sensibilities.
  • Excellent communication, creative collaboration and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities:

As a Writer at League of Geeks, you will own the iterative development of narrative content from concept to execution.

Working closely with the Game Director, Creative Director and Principal Designer, you will develop authentic, engaging stories that service the creative and practical needs of the product, audience, and IP. This is a hands-on writing role; you'll be responsible for the creation and maintenance of narrative documentation and scripts to service localisation and VO pipelines, as well as the implementation of written content into gameplay.

  • Develop and internally pitch original characters, environments and stories, within the constraints of a world-class IP and the gameplay framework.
  • Create and present concise, well organised gameplay scripts that meet the needs of the product as it evolves.
  • Implement narrative content in Unreal Engine 5, in collaboration with engineering and design.
  • Collaborate cross-discipline to develop and iterate on narrative delivery systems that seamlessly integrate story, character and gameplay into a cohesive experience.
  • Iterate and refine narrative delivery in response to playtesting and stakeholder feedback, honing a seamless integration of gameplay and narrative that delivers world-class non-linear storytelling.
  • Generate and maintain documentation to support localization and VO pipelines.
  • Communicate narrative requirements, opportunities and risks proactively and professionally.
  • Embody design as a collaborative, flexible practice, contributing to a work culture of meaningful feedback, creativity and growth.

Benefits:

  • Bring your dog to work. Yeah, dogs!
  • Talent development, mentorship and support.
  • Regular self-directed professional development days.
  • Flexible work arrangement opportunities and family-friendly considerations.
  • Menstrual, Menopause and Parental leave.
  • Sustainable working hours, environment and life-work balance.
  • Friday afternoon team social events, including monthly get-togethers.
  • Annual Summer Holidays Family Picnic and Winter Feast.
  • Melbourne International Games Week attendance.
  • Located in Melbourne, the most liveable city in Australia. Fourth in the world!

How to Apply:

Send an email with your cover letter, an up-to-date CV and folio with examples of your work.

In your cover letter, please share in 250 words or less, your favourite style hack, tip or trick for ensuring your writing is impactful and moving, without overimposing itself on the player and their experience.

Important Stuff:

  • Remuneration on offer (excluding benefits such as superannuation) is between $72,600k - $93,300k p.a AUD pro-rata, as per the length of the contract term. Remuneration is dependent on experience and expertise of the applicant.
  • This role can be held remotely (Australia only).
