Seeking a Senior Game Programmer for the Snackbar at the End of the World

Who We Are

We are Snackbar Studio, an all-remote, indie studio passionate about beautiful, narrative games (and also snacks. You gotta have snacks). We’re searching for a senior game programmer to join our team of industry veterans and bring our vision to life. If you’re skilled, experienced, and eager to make an impact on a small, creative team, we want to hear from you!

We recently secured funding for our first title - The SnackBar at the End of the World - a top-down, chill-action RPG for PC, Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. Players take the role of a chef in a magical, alternate-reality 1960s Italy where they forage, hunt, cook, and scheme to make lire, serve restaurant guests their favorite meals, and rescue their family from the authoritarian mayor’s prison (check out our non-public, investor trailer here).

Our game embraces antifascist, anti-racist, LGBTQ+ inclusive, feminist themes. So does our team. If that sounds like your jam, please read on!

Responsibilities

We need a Senior Game Programmer with extensive experience in the Unity Engine. Candidates must have worked on a minimum of three released titles, including at least one published on a major console (Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch). They should have an in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of video game development, as well as the ability to prioritize multiple assignments and interdependencies, solve challenging problems, and optimize game performance.

In the first few days, we'll give you an onboarding so you can get to know the team and immerse yourself in The Snackbar at the End of the World. Once you've settled in, it's time to get cooking (heh). Our Senior Game Programmer will:

  • Implement, iterate, and polish various features end-to-end, from systems to user interfaces, ensuring alignment with the project’s vision.
  • Design and implement scalable and maintainable code architectures, anticipating future project needs and supporting its long-term evolution.
  • Collaborate with the technical team to solve complex problems, improve game performance, propose different approaches for feature implementation, and enhance the game’s overall quality.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of development processes, tools, and plugins.
  • Work closely with the QA team to reproduce, debug, and fix reported bugs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in game development.
  • At least three released games, with at least one on a major console (Xbox, PlayStation or Switch). Other titles can be PC or indie releases (e.g., Steam, Itch.io, Game Jolt…) that demonstrate programming expertise.
  • Significant experience in Unity Engine and strong programming skills in C#.
  • Strong knowledge of software engineering principles, including object-oriented programming, design patterns, and code architecture.
  • Proficiency in source control.
  • Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills, including experience with performance profiling and optimization.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively, while contributing to a collaborative, remote team environment.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate with non-technical team members and write technical documentation.

Bonus Skills (not necessary, but nice to have)

  • Experience with console development and porting, including platform-specific requirements and optimization (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch).
  • Experience launching games on Steam and responding to player feedback with game fixes/improvements.
  • Knowledge of shader programming and graphics pipelines in Unity (URP, HDRP, or custom solutions).
  • Knowledge of additional programming or scripting languages.

What We Offer

  • Fully remote work. Candidates can work from anywhere. We may, on rare occasions, get the team together for a few days or a week in a shared location (we’re talking once or twice a year), but otherwise have no physical office.
  • Competitive and contract pay position. We offer a competitive rate (55.000-70.000€ annually, depending on experience, paid monthly). This is a contract position/rate, meaning that you’ll be responsible for your taxes.
  • Flexible scheduling. You will have flexible working hours within the European time zone (night owls and early birds equally welcome). There will be regular meetings with the lead developer and/or other team members to ensure deadlines and goals are met. Candidates are expected to put in 40 hours per week.

How to Apply

Send an email and include these three things:

  1. The three (most significant) published game titles you’ve worked on
  2. Your CV and LinkedIn profile
  3. Samples of your work and/or materials that can help us get to know you better

Unfortunately, we cannot reply to applications that fail to include these three items, so please make sure you send them. We’re eager to see your work!

About
Snackbar Studio

Snackbar Studio is a FRESH indie game Development firm. We don’t make snacks. We aren’t a bar (one of us keeps getting accused of being drunk at work, but that’s just because she keeps it real). We’re a team of industry professionals with decades of experience under our collective belts. We’ve developed dozens of games, published a handful of books, launched a few successful companies, and spent a large percentage of our lives trying to beat this one level on Metroid (and then we’ll go to bed, Mom! Promise.) (We lied, we are never going to bed.)

We’ve launched a new studio built around the idea that good times shouldn’t just begin when you pick up that controller - they should be part of every single workday. Because you can’t create fun for others if you aren’t having it yourself.

The SnackBar at the End of the World is a story about love, defiance, ... and pasta. Our first release? A top-down, chill-action RPG for PC, Switch, Playstation, and Xbox that will satisfy the most discerning appetites. Forage, hunt, cook, and scheme in a magical, alternate reality, 1960s Italy.

Escape your city’s walls to the forbidden wilderness beyond. Battle magically-possessed boars, some very irritable enchanted vegetables, and the corrupt local government. Discover a magical portal to an enchanted market run by… raccoons? And (perhaps most challenging of all) master the perfect cacio e pepe recipe before the tyrannical mayor shuts your restaurant down. (No pressure.)

Welcome to SnackBar. When you’re here, you’re part of the resistance.
